Halloween, spiders and fog.... love 'em, or hate 'em?

Heidi Dawson - coach, facilitator and hypnotherapist

For many people, Autumn is a season of rich colours, harvest festivals and those joyful warm days that surprise us with their last-minute reminders of Summer. Unfortunately, a significant number of people see Autumn as the season of spiders, dank, suffocating mists and a foreboding precursor to the dark winter months when anxiety and depression can really get a grip.

So, if you’re one of the lucky ones who revels in collecting conkers, making jam and capturing those glorious moments when the late sun glows through the red and gold leaves on the trees, good on yer… enjoy!

If, however, you’re one of those people who is quivering at the thought of the spiders that are about to invade your space, or can already feel the Winter Blues seeping into your world, ask yourself this: are you going to accept that this is just the way it is, or are you going to make a choice and do things differently this year?

I work with a lot of clients who want to deal with their phobias once and for all – spiders are a particular favourite at this time of year – and hypnotherapy is an efficient and effective way of doing this. Interestingly, many phobias are ‘learned’ behaviours from our childhood, when maybe a parent or other influential figure in our lives has displayed an irrational fear of something and this has caused a behaviour pattern to form in our own subconscious minds. Using hypnosis, we can change that behaviour pattern and, in most cases, the results are quick and permanent.

Anxiety and depression also respond well to hypnotherapy. As a sufferer myself, I know how easy it is to get sucked into the downward spiral of gloom and doom when the days become shorter and the warmth of the sun rarely gets the chance to lift our mood. So, if you find yourself ruminating over things that hold you in the past, or getting anxious about things that might happen in the future there are steps you can take to change your outlook, irrespective of the season.

For many people, the sense of helplessness we feel when anxiety and depression start to kick in is the killer. Just imagine then, how it would feel if you knew you had tools and strategies to help yourself out of that dark place… a DIY kit to lift your mood, help you focus on the positives and change your mindset before the demons take hold. That’s what hypnosis can give you – Control!

So, whether you’re facing phobias, panic and anxiety attacks, or depression, remember you do have a choice about the influence they have over your life.
